Your role as a family caregiver
Setting up a support system for yourself as a family caregiver is key. As the saying goes: you can’t pour from an empty cup. Make sure you find people to be on your team to help you provide excellent care, while taking good care of yourself. You might be interested in my post about Living in the Moment!
When feeling stressed you may need a counsellor to talk to, you may want to research a respite care service to have as a back-up should you ever need a break. There are so many ways you can support yourself to make your vital role of caregiver easier to manage. The goal is to take time to explore the options that work for you and have a plan to utilize those options. Ontario.ca has clear and concise information for family caregivers.
Asking for help
The people in your life are happy to help you with your role as a family caregiver, trust me! However, I know first-hand how it can be a little awkward asking for assistance here and there, but sometimes that is the best way to get exactly what you need. To make this process easier for you, we've created a list that you can either print and share or email with those close to you. It will guide them towards some things you that may need from time-to-time without having to have the awkward conversation. If they see that you are experiencing a stressful couple of days and want to help, the list can be a guiding light taking the burden of asking off your plate.
Life in general takes a village - so please, share our list and remember, Coaching for Caregivers Canada is here for you if you need us! Don’t be afraid to reach out!
